Question: What do you think of a MOB who bought a gown so low cut, she can’t wear a bra with it? She said,”I want to look sexy!” How do I convince her to return this inappropriate dress and buy a classy gown?—Vanessa
It's one thing to want to feel sexy as a mother of the bride or groom, but making a point to look sexy is the wrong vibe for the occasion.
Let's unpack this. Many perfectly appropriate special occasion dresses don't work with a bra. Strapless, one shoulder, a deep V-neck can all look wonderful and totally right on MOBs. It's okay to be hot (as in, looking; not temperature). We are fully in favor of moms showing some personality and pushing the envelope on style and attitude.
BUT. It should be done in a tasteful, sophisticated way. If the slit is so high guests might wonder if you are wearing underpants, or if the cleavage is so pronounced, no one can look you in the eye, it's not right for your turn as mother of the bride or groom.
So tell your friend: less is more. She should strive for quiet gorgeousness. Leave guests oohing and ahhing over her elegance—wondering how she achieved such amazing arm tone, or what gave her skin that amazing glow; not thinking she's on the prowl for husband No. 2. Or 3?
