When it comes to getting dressed up as mother of the bride or groom, the number one body sensitivity we hear from women: arms.
We asked fitness expert (and recent mother of the groom!) Chris Freytag for advice on achieving wedding-ready arms. "Let's get real," she says, "There's no quick fix to firming up arms after 50. But with some time and the right approach, you can absolutely tone up and feel fabulous."
The key, she says, is strength training. "Forget about last-minute arm workouts and instead focus on building lean muscle and losing excess body fat."
Freytag offers this guide:
Pick Up Those Weights
"Lifting weights breaks down muscle fibers, which your body then repairs to build lean, toned muscle. Don’t be afraid of heavy weights. You need to work to muscle fatigue and you won’t bulk up. Muscle is more compact than body fat. However, do allow yourself to ramp up slowly if you are a beginner."
Freytag demonstrates her ultimate arm tone exercises:
Fuel with Protein
"Post-workout, your muscles need protein to repair and grow. Keep your protein intake consistent throughout the day to maximize muscle repair and support lean muscle growth. Go for at least 100 grams of protein a day."
Lose Extra Body Fat
"If you want those beautiful, sculpted arms to stand out, reducing the fat layer covering them is key. Focus on a balanced diet rich in whole foods, plenty of steps, and some cardio. Remember, it’s not about 'spot reducing' but improving overall body composition."
Consistency is Key
"True transformation takes time—give it a good 3 to 6 months of strength training at least 3 to 4 times per week. Real change doesn’t happen overnight, but with dedication, it will happen!"
Dress for Success
"On your big day, pick a dress that makes you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin," Freytag says. "By combining smart strength training with good nutrition and consistency, you’re set to celebrate while looking and feeling amazing."
