Sharon G.: Petite Playbook

Sharon G.: Petite Playbook

Mother of: Josh
Venue: Intercontinental Hotel Boston
Vibe: Black tie
Dress: Runway Couture

When you’re petite like Sharon, who stands 4 foot 9, it’s not just that hemlines run long; the proportions tend to be off on many special occasion gowns. “A lot of dresses are just too much,” says the recent mother of the groom.

Shopping for her son Josh’s September 2024 wedding to Hannah, Sharon’s first stop was Runway Couture, a specialty boutique  in Bellmore, New York (Long Island) that prides itself on individual fit and features custom gowns made by its in-house designers. The store team immediately pegged Sharon as a “sparkly girl” and encouraged her to try on a fitted, charcoal gray halter style gown, embellished top to bottom in shimmering beads. The dress was about twice as long as Sharon, but that just created opportunity: the Runway Couture team cut off 20 inches from the hemline and made her a shawl, which she wore during the ceremony.

Sharon's look was perfectly in step with mother of the bride Ellen, whose one shoulder gown was also adorned with sparkling beads in midnight blue. Hers was custom made at Kelly Chase Couture in Bonita Springs, Florida.

“We complemented each other well,” Sharon says.

But everyone in the bride’s family towered over Sharon, so she wanted to wear heels—at least for the photos and ceremony. Sharon chose Naturalizer’s Delphie open-toe ankle strap platform sandal in silver. They’re described by the brand as “all day heels,” despite their lofty four-inch height, but Sharon said she never needed to change into her lower backup pair. “I highly recommend them.” And that was her second night in a row in high heels: She wore Naturalizer’s Melody four-inch platform sandal in champagne for the rehearsal dinner along with a hot pink above-the-knee short sleeve dress by Sachin & Babi.

“It’s been a love fest between the families and the joy of our families joining together,” Sharon says. “We know how lucky we are that we all get along so well. There was no bride side or groom side. It was everyone together, and it was so wonderful to have our families and friends there to share our children’s love.”
