Mary C.: Serendipity in Bronze

Mary C.: Serendipity in Bronze

Mother of: Nicholas
Venue: Oklahoma Contemporary museum
Vibe: Modern + intimate
Dress: Rickie Freeman for Teri Jon

Nicholas and Destiny started dating during their junior year at the University of Arkansas and they’ve been together ever since. They were engaged for two years, and still, it came down to the month before the wedding, and mother of groom Mary still hadn’t found her dress.

She knew she wanted a full length gown, preferably off the shoulder. She was trying to complement the autumnal color scheme for the October, 2024 wedding. She started looking at dresses well in advance and ordered at least 20 different options, which were all returned.

There was no backup plan, but Mary wasn’t stressed. “I do my best work at the last minute,” she says. “I was pretty confident it would all work out.”

And it did. The last dress to arrive was a bronze jacquard A-line gown by Rickie Freeman for Teri Jon. The twist front neckline was a showstopper, and off the shoulder, just as Mary wanted.

“I loved the style, and the color,” Mary said. On a practical note, the thick fabric packed well, and maintained its shape without a wrinkle throughout the entire wedding day.

The wedding took place at the Oklahoma Contemporary Museum in Oklahoma City. Surrounded by around 130 guests, the couple was married by a pastor who had known Destiny since birth. After the ceremony, guests were invited to  tour the Outre West exhibit which featured the works of architects who were educated in Oklahoma and later developed groundbreaking projects in California. Serendipitous, Mary says, since the bride is from Oklahoma, and the groom grew up in California.

After dinner came a lively night of dancing. The bride and groom had taken dance lessons and surprised everyone with a memorable first number choreographed to a version of Sam Smith’s “Latch.” Then came the mother-son dance to Van Morrison’s “Days Like This.”

Says the proud MOG, “I was just so euphoric all weekend long, celebrating the happy couple with all the friends and family who came from near and far to be with them.”
