Martha A.: Dressed to Dance

Martha A.: Dressed to Dance

Mother of: Simón
Wedding locale: River House at Lowndes Grove in Charleston, South Carolina
Vibe: Black tie under the stars
Dress: Betsy & Adam

The thought of finding a mother-of-the-groom dress stressed Martha out, so she shopped early for her son Simón’s December 2022 wedding. Eight months early, to be exact.

Simón and his bride Sallie attended the College of Charleston, but they didn't officially meet until a few years later, when they both landed in Charlotte, North Carolina. Martha says the two complement each other so well—Simón is serious; Sallie, more easy going. Simón family moved to the U.S. from Medellin, Colombia. The wedding celebrated a merging of their family cultures and traditions.

The bride encouraged Martha to wear whatever made her feel comfortable. At Macy's, she found a floor length navy gown by Betsy & Adam with sheer short sleeves that shimmered with pearls. “It fit me like a glove,” she says. The body skimming style provided support, while allowing movement, which was especially important to Martha, who was planning for the mother-son dance.

Martha picked a special song, “El Privilegio de Amar” by Manuel Mijares, with lyrics that speak to the privilege of a mother’s love for her child and teaching him what truly matters in life as he sets out on his own journey. A beautiful tearjerker, to be sure, made even more special when Simón, who is known to be quite the dancer, spun his mother around the dance floor under strings of lights and a canopy oak trees along the Ashley River waterfront in downtown Charleston.

“My mom has knee issues and was really worried about dancing with him,” her daughter Manuela says. “It was a very sweet moment and the song just fit perfectly.”

Betsy & Adam is a go-to special occasion brand for its tasteful styles and wide range of sizes including plus and petites. See a few of our current favorites from Betsy & Adam.
