Kathy P.: Trust Your Gut

Kathy P.: Trust Your Gut

Mother of: Lauren
Venue: White Oaks Vineyard in Dahlonega, Georgia
Vibe: Vineyard romance
Dress: Silvia Tcherassi

Like most mothers of the bride who can’t fully believe they’ve reached this milestone, Kathy had one non-negotiable in choosing a dress. “I did not want to look matronly,” she says with a shudder.

Kathy added, “I did not want to look like every other MOB out there. I wanted my own style and personality to shine through.”

Her daughter Lauren and groom Kyle were scheduled to get married outdoors at the White Oaks Vineyard in the North Georgia Mountains. The bride’s only request: coordinate with the bridesmaids who would be wearing cabernet colored dresses.  Don’t match, don’t clash.

After trying on 50 dresses, Kathy was getting discouraged. Many of the dresses looked nice, and fit well, Kathy says, but, “they just weren’t calling my name.”

And then, right on cue, Instagram served up a dress that was everything Kathy wanted: vibrant, flowy, whimsical. It felt right for an autumn outdoor wedding–too often moms make the mistake of going more formal than the setting demands. The off-the-shoulder long sleeve dress in vibrant shades of pink was darker near the hemline for added drama, with a corded, gold accent belt to create some structure.

“It felt sophisticated yet playful,” Kathy says. “It immediately felt like me.”

The dress is by a designer Kathy hadn’t shopped before: Silvia Tscherassi, known for her Latin flair. The namesake label is sold through high-end department stores like Bergdorf Goodman and at Silvia Tscherassi boutiques worldwide.

Kathy accessorized with Alexis Bittar crystal and gold drop earrings. Her Sam Edelman champagne gold “Daniella” block heel sandals were perfect for walking in the grass and dancing all night. She carried a Karen Mullen burgundy velvet clutch.

Her best advice for other MOBs to be: “Stay true to who you are and stop asking other people their opinions. It has to be what feel right to you. The only people you need approval from are your bride and yourself. Just trust your gut!”
