Donna isn’t known for wearing bright colors, but she found the department store selection of special occasion dresses to be so “dark, dreary, and matronly” that when she spotted a bright berry sequined dress at a special occasion shop in Pennsylvania, it called to her, like a gem.

“I knew I didn’t want a typical mother of the groom dress,” Donna says. “A wedding is a celebration and I wanted to look festive. I loved the sequin. The bright berry color made me feel wonderful.”

And so did her girlfriends, who threw Donna, the mother of two boys, a mother of the groom tea party. “My two best friends are also boy moms, so we never got to shop for prom gowns or have a shopping buddy.” Before Nathan and Taylor's wedding, her friends surprised her with a gathering all her own. “My friends are the best,” Donna says. “I’d recommend this type of celebration for any boy mom.”

Still, her boys gave her plenty to celebrate last summer. THe night before Nathan and Taylor’s wedding, the wife of Donna’s other son gave birth to her first grandchild. “We added two family members in about 20 hours. It was glorious.”

The wedding took place last summer at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware. Donna’s son Nathan, and bride Taylor held the ceremony outside and guests moved to a ballroom for dinner and dancing.
