Anne Marie D.: Garden Blues

Anne Marie D.: Garden Blues

Mother of: Alexandra
Wedding locale: The Estate at Moraine Farm in Beverly, Mass.
Vibe: Garden wedding
Dress: Xscape from Lord & Taylor

Floral felt fitting for the garden wedding of Anne Marie’s daughter Alexandra, who runs a mobile thrift shop out of a vintage Volkswagen bus.

True to the bride’s brand, Mayfly, she made her own wedding gown out of upcycled fabric. Meanwhile, Anne Marie was on the hunt for a summer dress both colorful and feminine. She shopped local, and online, but kept coming back to an off-the-shoulder dress by Xscape with an all-over blue floral raised lace appliqué pattern. Totally modern, yet vintage inspired. The tea length (longer in back) was perfect for strolling across the lawns of the wedding venue, a countryside estate outside Boston.

“It was well structured and flattering,” Anne Marie says of her dress, purchased at Lord & Taylor. “The print was perfect—not too big and overpowering. It’s really quite a lovely dress for something off the rack.”

Despite a rainy forecast the week of the wedding in June, 2022, the clouds parted and the sun shined bright. “People really did say it was probably the best wedding they’d been to,” Anne Marie says, “and I know the place was lovely and the food was really good, but I think if it had been at a VFW hall, they may have said the same thing because Alexandra and Parker are just a special couple.”

The night they met in December, 2019, Alexandra could have been at a concert with her mom and sisters. Instead, she dropped them off and went to The Bebop in Boston with a friend. Parker spotted Alexandra at the bar and asked what she was drinking (hot chocolate; she was the designated driver). He left his number on a coaster, and Alexandra messaged him a few days later. They became a couple just before the pandemic shutdowns of March 2020, and didn’t see each other for two months. But they got to know each other over FaceTime.

“They are super affectionate with each other; they support each other’s hopes and dreams,” Anne Marie says.

Clearly it was meant to be: the newlyweds own matching VW buses.
