It was love at first sight when Tera Nutter saw the black and white striped satin ballgown in a Mac Duggal ad. She located the dress at Nordstrom and bought it for her daughter’s July wedding — without even trying it on until an alterations appointment.
“It was the vision from the second I laid eyes on it,” Tera says. She then made it her own, adding a cropped short sleeve black cardigan she found on Amazon and an oversized pink flower brooch from an Etsy artist. Her Rothy's Mary Janes not only matched the preppy-with-a-twist look, they were comfortable all day.

“I think she saw the joy on my face when I showed her the picture,” Tera says. “She just knew it was ‘so her mom,’ and she loved seeing me spread my artsy wings a little with the pin and the sweater. She has always embraced my love of fashion and my habit of marching to my own drummer when it comes to what I wear.”
Like mother, like daughter. When Abbie got engaged to longtime love Andrew, she easily identified her own perfect wedding dress: a classic long sleeve ballgown with scalloped neckline by Rosa Clara.
“Her dress was stunning and so perfectly her," Tera says, "I don’t think she realized that ‘ah-ha’ moment would be true for me too!”
Abbie had encouraged her mom to find something she loved (check!) that matched the vibe of the vision she and Andrew had for the wedding (check again!).
The summer event was intimate, with 90 guests, but big on personality. It took place at the sweeping, history-rich southern Indiana resort, The West Baden Springs Hotel. Says Tera, “Their wedding was such a natural extension of who they are as a couple. Classic, preppy, and beautiful, with just enough quirky touches to keep things interesting.”
The key to realizing the wedding vision, and being relaxed enough to enjoy it, was Monica Richard, owner of Mon Amie Events in Indianapolis. “She spent hours talking with Abbie, Andrew, and my husband and me to create the weekend with so much thought, creativity, and love.”
Hiring a planner isn’t cheap, Tera acknowledged. And turning over control can be challenging for someone like Tera who is quick to make a Pinterest board and loves hosting parties. But this one was different.
“To arrive at our venue and not have one care, not one worry, just knowing it was all being handled and executed behind the scenes while I walked around with a glass of champagne in my hand, laughing and enjoying family time, friend time, and basking in the happiness with my daughter,” Tera describes. “I feel like my family floated the entire weekend. All of our dreams were actualized.”
